What is the H.264 and H.265 codec
What is the H.265 codec?
The H.265 format, also known as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), is the successor to the H.264 codec. It encodes video at half the bitrate at the same video quality as its predecessor, with a maximum resolution of up to 7,680 x 4,320 pixels.
What does it deliver in practice?
- Recording takes up 50% less storage capacity.
- Watching streams over the Internet requires half the speed at the same resolution.
- Security camera images can be up to 4K with low bitrate .
Upgraded H.264+ and H.265+ codec
As the resolution of cameras increases, the compression of the data stream constantly needs to be improved, which is why our PATRONUM IP cameras and recorders are equipped with the upgraded H.265+ codec. These version improvements deliver even lower bitrates while maintaining the same sharpness and image quality as the H.265 codec. These savings not only mean smaller transmission system equipment, but also save storage capacity, which can accommodate much more footage. Compared to the H.264 codec, it can save up to 70% space while maintaining the same quality.
The H.264 codec has also been upgraded. The H.264+ version provides an intermediate step between the next version, which can still save a large amount of storage.
