How to choose a hard drive capacity
Hard drives for recording devices
Our PATRONUM camera systems support hard drives from almost all manufacturers. However, we always recommend hard drives that are designed for use in camera systems. A good choice is, for example, Western Digital's PURPLE series. Built specifically for the needs of camera system recording equipment, these hard drives are ready to run 24/7, have reduced power consumption, offer up to 8TB of capacity while supporting 64 cameras per drive and up to 8+ drives per system. These hard drives also have vibration sensors that stabilize the drive's write head, extending the life of the drive.
What capacity to choose?
If you are recording continuously, i.e. recording from all cameras continuously, then calculating the capacity of the hard drive is relatively simple. Just take into account the number of cameras, their resolution, frames per second (FPS) and possibly codec compression (bitrate). For detection, i.e. alarm recording, the capacity depends on the number of events and the system configuration. In this case, up to 95% of the capacity per day can be saved compared to continuous recording.
In general, the following assumptions can be made for continuous recording and maximum quality:
- 2.0Mpx camera - approx. 20GB/day
- 5.0Mpx camera - approx. 45GB/day
- 8.0Mpx camera - approx. 75GB/day
- You can also calculate yourself thanks to the calculator
Valid for AHD and IP cameras. When using the H.265 codec, you can count on lower data consumption of the system.
